Midland, Mich. - The 2005 ITA Great Lakes Division II Championship is in the books, as WSU junior Steph Nicolson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover) lasted until the third round, the best showing by the Warriors in the singles draw.
Nicolson, seeded 16th in the tournament, won her first two matches on Friday, but was unable to fend off fourth-seeded Leila Salek of Ferris State, who won 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles play, Nicolson and junior Stephanie Van Tuyl (Riverview, Mich./Gabriel Richard) lost in the first round to the eighth-seeded team of Reily Ackerman and Kimberly Decker. The duo from Southern Illinois won the match 8-0.
Junior Amanda Pressotto (Trenton, Mich.) and redshirt junior Dee Mays (Detroit, Mich./Utica) fared slightly better, winning their first round match against Michigan Tech opponents Jen Jensen and Carly Robinson 8-0. However, the sixth-seeded combination of Maria Amato and Alejandra Miranda-Sanchez from Drury defeated the last remaining Warriors 8-1.
Wayne State will play their rescheduled exhibition match against Western Ontario on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 p.m., beginning a stretch of five straight home matches.
