Women's Tennis Places Finishers in Top Eight at ITA Great Lakes Regional Tournament

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Wayne State women's tennis team wrapped up a long weekend at the ITA Great Lakes Regional, Sunday. No. 4 seeded Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ontario/ Academie Ste. Cecile), advanced two rounds further than she did last year. In the semifinal round Gill could not surpass No. 8 Khrystsina Tryboi (Drury). Tryboi won in straight sets despite Gill forcing extra games in the second, 6-4 and 7-6.

Freshman Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary School), had a very strong showing in her first matches of the season. She advanced to the round of eight, defeating the No. 9 seed Ingrid Pflieger (Lake Superior State University), and the No. 5 seed Alba Passanisi (Drury University), before falling to No. 1 Darina Berkova (Northwood).

Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero), advanced to the second round when she defeated Gaby Alladio (LSSU) and then bowed out in straight sets to No. 2 Chandra Capossi (Drury), 6-3, 6-4.

The seemingly unstoppable doubles team of Gill and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School), suffered their first loss of the season, Saturday. They were stopped by Schaffer/Shipman (Grand Valley) in the quarterfinal, losing 8-6. Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio), and her partner Goranskaya also advanced to the round of eight where they ran into No. 2 Capozzi/Tryboi (Drury), and fell 8-2.

The Warriors will in action at Northwood on Wednesday Sept. 24. at 2 p.m.
