DETROIT, Mich. - The Warriors of Wayne State women's tennis narrowly defeated Michigan Tech 5-4 on a breezy Saturday morning in Detroit. WSU took four singles matches after dropping two of three doubles contests to start the day.
Redshirt junior Dee Mays (Detroit, Mich./Utica) picked up her fourth singles victory in dual match play this season, defeating Amy Palmgren 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles spot.
Also victorious were junior Amanda Pressotto at No. 3 singles over Samantha Jang-Stewart (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) and junior Stephanie Van Tuyl (Riverview, Mich./Gabriel Richard) at No. 4 singles over Jen Jensen (6-2, 6-0). For the second time this season, freshman Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich./Taylor Truman) shut out an opponent 6-0, 6-0, this time defeating Katie Hesterberg at No. 6 singles.
WSU's lone doubles win came courtesy of Van Tuyl and senior Olga Petrovic (Windsor, Ont./Kennedy C.I.), who defeated Hesterberg and Monika Malinska 8-5. For Petrovic, it marks her first win since returning from injury.
The Warriors will remain at home for more GLIAC play next week, taking on Northwood on Thursday, Sept. 29, and Saginaw Valley on Saturday, Oct. 1.
