DETROIT, Mich. - After falling behind 3-0 in doubles play, the Wayne State women's tennis team mounted a late singles rally but it was not enough as the Warriors dropped their second consecutive conference dual match in a 5-4 heartbreaker to Ashland at the AU Tennis Courts. WSU falls to 1-2 (1-2 GLIAC) while Ashland improves to 9-1 (4-1 GLIAC).
For the second straight match, WSU found its self in a 3-0 hole as Ashland swept all three doubles matches. The No. 1 tandem of freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) had the Warriors' best chance to secure a point but dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Katherine Goudy/Megan Stoll. Juniors Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) and Ashley Hooper (Orangeville, Ont./Orangeville District Secondary School also fell in a hard fought match, 8-4, to Chelsey Guerin/Christa Halicki at the No. 3 position.
However, WSU was able to stage a come back during singles play as Gill upended Myra Pepino, 6-2, 7-5, while Vuksanovic held off Goudy in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively.
At the No. 4 position, freshman Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) dispatched Chelsey Guerin, 6-3, 6-1, along with Bhatt who defeated Morgan Sanders, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6.
Wayne State's fate would be decided in two tight three set matches. In both occasions, the Warriors took the first set but could not hold on as sophomore Megan Luzod fell 6-7, 7-6, 6-1, to Stoll at the No. 3 spot while freshmen Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) dropped a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, decision to Corinne Pasley at the No. 5 position.
The Warriors continue conference play with a 10 a.m. dual match at Mercyhurst Saturday, Sept. 29.
