Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State women's tennis team dropped its third consecutive conference dual match falling 8-1 to Mercyhurst at the Westwood Tennis Club. WSU falls to 1-3 (1-3 GLIAC) while Mercyhurst improves to 8-1 (5-1 GLIAC).
WSU's double match problems continued as the Warriors were swept 3-0 for the third straight match. The No. 1 tandem of freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) fell 8-2 to Jennifer Daly/Kim Ezzo while Mercyhurst took both No. 2 and No. 3 matches by a score of 8-3.
In singles play, the lone bright spot came from Gill who easily dispatched Daly, 6-0, 6-0, to give Wayne State its only point of the match. Freshman Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) lost a hard fought match to Elizabeth Mullane, 7-5, 6-4, at the No. 5 singles while junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) also fell in a tough decision to Kelton Macke, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 6 spot.
The Warriors continue conference play with a 1 p.m. home dual match against Lake Superior State Friday, Oct. 5.
