DETROIT - The Wayne State women's tennis team notched its first non-conference win over a Division I opponent this season as the Warriors upended Valparaiso, 8-1, Monday afternoon at the WSU Tennis Courts. With the win, the Warriors reach the .500 mark at 4-4 (3-4 GLIAC).

WSU came out of the gate hitting on cylinders sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. The No. 1 tandem of freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) downed Jenny Schwartz and Molly Keifer, 8-3, while sophomore Megan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) and freshman Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) edged Julie Wingstrom and Lindsey Gustafson, 9-7, at No.2. Freshmen Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) also defeated Jackie O'Reilly and Lauren Kloostra, 8-4, at the No. 3 position.

In singles competition, Wayne State kept the pressure on taking five out of six matches to lock up the 8-1 win. Gill downed Schwartz, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 with Vuksanovic defeating Keifer, 6-1 6-1, at the No. 2 slot. At No. 4, Bradford dispatched Christine Antrobus, 6-0, 6-2, while Correa took out Laura Lawson, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. Bhatt also downed Kloostra, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6.

The Warriors resume conference play with a road dual match at Grand Valley State Monday, Oct. 15 at 3:00 p.m.
