Big Rapids, Mich. - The Wayne State women's tennis team fished the regular season on a high note with a 6-3 conference dual match victory over Ferris State at the FSU Racquet & Fitnness Center. WSU finishes 5-5 (4-5 GLIAC) while FSU falls to 3-6 (3-6 GLIAC).
Wayne State took an early 3-0 lead sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 tandem of freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) rolled past Amy Ingle and Ann Grant, 8-1, while sophomore Megan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) and freshman Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) held off Daniela Dimas and Sarah Thompson, 8-4, at No.2. Freshmen Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) dispatched Tiffany Rheynard and Jessie Conklin, 8-4, at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, both teams split taking three matches each. Gill had her four-match win streak snapped in a hard fought three set decision by Ingle, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). Luzod took out Grant in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, at No. 2 while Correa upended Conklin, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Bhatt also downed Thompson, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 to preserve the 6-3 win for WSU.
The Warriors travel to Midland, Mich. for the 2007 GLIAC Tournament held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27 & 28, at 9:00 a.m.
