Midland, Mich. - The No. 6 seed Wayne State women's tennis team upset No. 3 seed Ashland, 5-2, in the first round of the 2007 GLIAC Tournament to advance to the semi-final round at the MCTC.
WSU (6-5, 4-5 GLIAC) was able to avenge a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Ashland (15-3, 7-2 GLIAC) during the regular season. The Warriors came out and took two of three double matches to take an early 2-1 lead.
The No. 1 tandem of freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) defeated Katherine Goudy and Megan Stoll, 8-6, while junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) and freshmen Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) shutout Chelsey Guerin and Christa Halicki, 8-0, at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Gill downed Myra Pepino, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot while freshman Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) dispatched Chelsey Guerin, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 along with Bhatt who defeated Morgan Sanders, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 to secure the 5-2 match win.
The Warriors will take on No. 2 seed Grand Valley in semi-final action Oct. 27.
