Midland, Mich. - The No. 6 seed Wayne State women's tennis team closed out the season with a 5-4 set back to No. 5 seed Michigan Tech in the third place match of the 2007 GLIAC Tournament at the MCTC.
The Warriors finished in fourth place overall and closed out the year with a 6-7 record (4-5 GLAIC). MTU finished in third with an 8-5 (5-4 GLIAC) final mark.
Michigan Tech took a 2-1 lead taking 2-of-3 doubles matches. Freshmen Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) notched WSU's only doubles point at the No. 1 position holding off Nicole Kirch and Amy Palmgren, 9-7.
In singles competition, Gill nipped Palmgren, 7-6, 7-5, at the No. 1 singles position while sophomore Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) downed Nicole Kirch, 7-5, 6-1 at No 3. At the No. 5 slot, freshmen Deby Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) def. Asel Otunchieva in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 but MTU's Samantha JangStewart downed freshmen Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), 6-1, 6-4, at No 4.
WSU's fate would be decided would be in two three set matches. Junior Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich.-Taylor Truman) took the first set from Nathalia Rondelli but could not hold on falling, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 position while Vuksanovic rallied from a set down to force a third but fell short 6-1, 0-6, 7-5, to Silvia Oliveros.
