PENSACOLA, Fla. - Wayne State University's volleyball team claimed its second straight 3-0 decision with a win over the University of Montevallo Saturday afternoon at the West Florida Comfort Inn-vitational. The Warriors, who improve to 2-1, defeated UM 30-24, 30-18 and 30-19. Junior outside hitter Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had her best match of the young season and her first double-double of the year with 14 kills and 10 digs to go with four block assists. Middle blocker Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./GVSU) had an extraordinary hitting performance with a match-high 16 kills, surpassing her career high she set one day ago. Joris hit .750 with just one error in 20 attempts. The Warriors out-blocked their opponent for the second straight match, with an impressive 11-2 margin led by Sofi Berczely's (Buenos Aires, Argentina) seven assists and senior Toni Purgatori's (Yale, Mich./Lake-Sumter C.C.) five assists. Purgatori also had a season-high 11 kills and five assists. Junior setter Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./Kal. Valley C.C.) had a season-best 39 assists and eight digs against the Lady Falcons who fell to 0-4 overall. WSU will face Mesa State at 7 pm Saturday night to close out the tournament.
