SEASIDE, Calif. - In Wayne State's first intercollegiate athletic contest of the 2008-09 season, the WSU volleyball team (1-0) swept Merrimack (0-1), 3-0, Friday afternoon at the Otter Classic, hosted by Cal State University Monterey Bay.

Newcomers Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) combined for 23 kills, while Mallast led the offense with a .474 attack percentage.

Wayne State, which trailed by as many as five points in the first set, erased a 21-19 deficit and won six straight points to take the opener.

WSU took an early 5-4 lead in the second set and never trailed the rest of the way, winning 25-18. The team jumped out to an 11-1 advantage in the third and ended the match with a 25-16 triumph.

Three Wayne State players - Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.), Marcie Hill (Dearborn, Mich.) and Gosselin - posted double-digit dig totals. Mallast also contributed 10 blocks, while setter Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) finished with 34 assists.

Ashley Penny (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon) and Ashley Burgess (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) each made their collegiate debuts ... Penny, who redshirted last season, had two kills and two digs ... WSU collectively outhit Merrimack, .221 to .046 ... both Wayne State and Merrimack are nicknamed the Warriors.
