SEASIDE, Calif. - The Wayne State volleyball team (1-1) dropped a 3-1 decision to Western Oregon (1-0) at the CSU Monterey Bay Otter Classic on Friday evening.
After the Warriors fell in the first set, 25-19, they battled to a 25-23 setback in a set which never saw more than a three-point differential between the two teams.
Trailing 6-3 early in the third, Wayne State took 11 of the next 14 points en route to a 25-20 win. In the fourth, however, the Warriors and Wolves were tied 9-9 before WOU went on a 16-5 run to win the match.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) finished with a team-high 17 kills, while Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) had 12 kills, a squad-best .409 attack percentage and seven blocks including three solo.
Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) collected 21 digs, and Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) totaled 40 assists as well as three service aces.
Wayne State will play two matches Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET against Humboldt State. The Warriors will face the host CSUMB Otters at 4:00 p.m. ET.
