LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Accurate hitting and defensive proficiency helped the WSU volleyball team to a 3-1 (22-30, 30-19, 20-16, 30-24) win over Colorado Christian University (2-1) Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Clash in the Foothills tournament in Lakewood, Colorado. The Warriors (2-1) tallied 72 kills and recorded 107 digs in the four-game match.
Four Wayne State players had double-digits in kills led by sophomore Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) with 16. Classmate Sei Hee Hwang (Toronto, Ont./Cedarbrae) and junior Toni Purgatori (Yale, Mich./Lake-Sumter C.C.)each had 15 while sophomore middle blocker Kelita Sinclair (Caledon, Ont./Turner Fenton) had 13 kills and just one hitting error for a team season-high .400 hitting percentage.
The Warriors had five players in double-digits digs. Smolen (23 digs) and Hwang (22 digs) recorded double-doubles, while senior BreAnne Detrick (Lambertville, Mich./Owens C.C.)also had 23 digs and Hague (15) and redshirt freshman Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) (12) helped the cause.
Senior setter Rebecca Hague (Leamington, Ont.) had a season-high 58 assists and Hwang added nine of her own.
WSU out-hit the Cougars in kills (72-41) and efficiency (.237-.111).
Wayne State wraps up tournament play tonight against Montana State-Billings at 6:00 p.m.
