SEASIDE, Calif. - In a tightly-contested volleyball match pitting Wayne State against Humboldt State, the Warriors came away with a 3-1 victory Saturday morning in their third of four matches at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Classic.
The two sides split the first two sets by identical 25-19 scores before Wayne State led wire-to-wire in the third set on its way to a 25-20 win. The Warriors were able to fend off the Lumberjacks in the fourth, winning by the slimmest of margins, 25-23, to take the match.
Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) paced the WSU offense with 16 kills and a .464 attack percentage. Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) collected 11 kills for the Warriors.
Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) and Marcie Hill (Dearborn, Mich.) totaled 15 and 10 digs, respectively, while setter Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) had 38 assists, four service aces and four blocks.
Wayne State will wrap up its participation in the Otter Classic at 4:00 p.m. ET Saturday with a matchup against the hosts from CSU Monterey Bay.
NOTES
Despite a 47-45 advantage for Humboldt State in total kills, Wayne State outhit HSU, .186 to .156 ... Mallast has hit over .400 in each of her first three matches in a Warrior uniform ... Westenberg's four aces led all players, as did Kim Gear's (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) five blocks.
