FINDLAY, Ohio - In its first match at the TownePlace Suites Classic, hosted by the University of Findlay, the Wayne State volleyball team (0-2) lost a tough five-game match to Walsh University, 3-2, on Friday afternoon.
The Warriors battled to a 33-31 victory in the first game, but dropped the next two (30-17, 30-16) to fall behind, 2-1. Wayne State bounced back to dominate the fourth game (30-19), posting a .429 attack percentage to Walsh's mark of -.111.
Walsh recovered to claim the fifth and deciding game by a score of 15-10.
Miranda Robison (Coldwater, Mich.) recorded her first double-double as a Warrior, totalling 16 kills and 23 digs, each team-highs. Holly Soldenski (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) and Jordan Peek (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) contributed 14 and 11 kills, respectively, while strong defensive efforts came from Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser), who tallied 14 digs, and Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina), who had 13 digs.
"Overall the effort today was good," said coach Ernie Gilbert after the match, "and gives us something to build upon."
Wayne State will face California (Pa.) in its second match of the tournament at 5:00 p.m.
