CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (2-0) opened its 2005 season with a pair of wins on Friday, Sept. 2 at the at the Holiday Inn Meadow Lands Classic, hosted by California (Pa.), giving head coach Ernie Gilbert the perfect birthday present.

In the first match, the Warriors recorded a 3-0 sweep of Virginia Union (1-2) with game scores of 30-17, 30-19, 30-9.

WSU's momentum continued as it took the first game against Edinboro (1-1), 30-23. The Fighting Scots battled back to take a 2-1 lead in the match with 33-31 and 30-25 wins in the next two games. Wayne State evened the match with a 30-21 victory in the fourth game, forcing a fifth and decisive set.

Trailing 8-5 in the fifth, the Warriors came back to go up 12-10 when redshirt junior Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) served out the match with three consecutive aces for a 15-10 win.

Wayne State continues action at the tournament against St. Joseph's and West Virginia State on Saturday.
