CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Wayne State escaped the Holiday Inn Meadow Lands Classic with an unblemished 4-0 record as the Warriors earned 3-2 win over West Virginia State Saturday afternoon at California (Pa.) University. It was WSU's second five-game match victory of the early season.

"We played really well in the five-game matches. To get to the fifth, and win it, we had to do things out of the norm and change duties. The team responded superbly and I couldn't be happier," said head coach Ernie Gilbert. "Every change we made was a positive change."

In game one against the Yellow Jackets, senior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had a perfect start with six kills and no errors in six total attempts. The outside hitter finished the match with 19 kills and 23 digs for her second straight double-double.

Also adding double-doubles were Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./GVSU) with 18 kills and a team-best 11 blocks and Karri Kuczajda (Waterford, Mich./Henry Ford CC) who had 12 kills and 10 digs.

Junior libero Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./St. Clair CCC) fell two shy of the school record as she recorded 44 digs.

WSU returns to the court next weekend at the Capital City Classic in Charleston, W.Va.
