FINDLAY, Ohio - In its first of four matches at the University of Findlay TownePlace Suites Classic, the Wayne State University volleyball team (5-0) defeated the University of Southern Indiana (3-2) by a score of 3-0 in a match which, despite the shutout result, was very closely contested (25-21, 26-24, 25-23).

Leading the charge for the Warriors, who have yet to drop a set this season, was senior Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino), who totaled 12 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the year.

In a back-and-forth opening set, the Screaming Eagles took a timeout while trailing, 20-17, and proceeded to take four of the next five points to tie it at 21-21. Wayne State closed out the set, however, thanks to a four-point run aided by a service ace from Jenich and kills by Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln), who combined for six of WSU's 11 kills in the set.

Wayne State trailed for much of the second set but recovered and was on the verge of winning it when USI nabbed five straight points to knot the score at 24-24 and force extra points. Following a kill from Jenich and a block by Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) and Mallast, the Warriors took a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Wayne State took its first lead at 19-18 and held USI off for a 25-23 victory and its fifth shutout triumph in as many matches this season.

Mallast finished with nine kills, including six in the final set, and tied Kent with a squad-high six blocks. Gosselin had 10 kills with seven digs, while Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) contributed 31 assists and nine digs. Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) tied Jenich for team-high honors with 10 digs.

Wayne State will meet Minnesota-Crookston at 5:00 on Friday evening.
