ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Warriors overcame a slow start to defeat Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 (19-30, 30-18, 30-24, 30-28) in match two of the Days Inn Classic volleyball tournament hosted by GVSU on Friday, Sept. 5.

After dropping game one, WSU came back to win the second game thanks in part to an eight-point scoring rally with senior Rebecca Hague (Leamington, Ont.) serving. The senior co-captain finished the match with a game-high 56 assists and 12 digs.

Following the slow start, the Warrior hitters got in a grove and managed 56 kills while only committing 19 errors in the final three games. They finished with a .260 hitting percentage compared to UWP's .184.

Three WSU players ended the match with a hitting percentage above .400. Toni Purgatori (Yale, Mich./Lake-Sumter C.C.) had 17 kills and only one error (.457), sophomore Kelita Sinclair (Caledon, Ont./Turner Fenton) recorded 11 kills and three errors (.444) while classmate Jeana Wiehl (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) had nine kills and two miscues.

Sophomore outside hitter Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had her second double-double of the day with 15 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Sei Hee Hwang (Toronto, Ont./Cedarbrae) (12), BreAnne Detrick (Lambertville, Mich./Owens C.C.) (13) also reached the double-digit kills mark. The Warriors owned an 80-58 advantage in the digs category.

Wayne State continues play at the tournament Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Alderson-Broaddus and wraps the weekend up at 6:00 p.m. against No. 12 North Alabama.
