FINDLAY, Ohio - In its first match at the TownePlace Suites Classic, hosted by the University of Findlay, the Wayne State volleyball team (4-1) swept Bellarmine (1-1) in three sets Friday afternoon at Croy Gymnasium.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) led the Warriors with 10 kills, while Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) contributed eight kills and three blocks apiece. Gear also had a match-best .700 attack percentage.
After soundly defeating the Knights in the first set, 25-13, the Warriors won the last two by much tighter scores of 26-24 and 25-21.
Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) totaled nine digs, Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) had seven kills, and Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) compiled 33 assists.
Wayne State will meet Wheeling Jesuit on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.
NOTES
Wayne State outhit Bellarmine, .253 to .116 ... the Warriors posted respective attack percentages of .400 and .308 in the first two sets ... Gosselin has reached 10 kills or more in all five matches this season ... Westenberg's 33 assists fell one shy of her three-set season-high ... Bazzi was held to a single-digit dig total for just the second time in her WSU career (she also had nine digs Sept. 28, 2007 at Mercyhurst).
