FINDLAY, Ohio - The Wayne State volleyball team (5-3) wrapped up its participation in the TownePlace Suites Classic with a 3-0 win (25-20, 26-24, 25-20) over former GLIAC member Gannon (3-5) on Saturday afternoon at the University of Findlay.
Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) notched 13 kills, eight blocks, and four service aces to lead the Warriors. Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) had nine kills with just one error (.533), while Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) led WSU defensively with 15 digs.
After calling a timeout with a 7-4 deficit in the first set, the Warriors responded by winning eight of the next 10 points on their way to a 25-20 win.
Wayne State led, 24-20, in the second set before Gannon won four straight points to knot the score at 24 apiece. The Warriors took the last two points, however, to grab a two-set lead.
In the third set, the Warriors built a 23-13 advantage until the Golden Knights won seven of the next eight to narrow the score to 24-20. A kill by Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln), however, put the match away and gave WSU the sweep.
Wayne State will open both its home and GLIAC schedule Friday when the Warriors host Grand Valley State at 7:00 p.m.
NOTES
Gosselin had six kills in the match as well as nine digs ... four of WSU's five wins this season have been three-set sweeps ... Mallast has reached double-digit kill totals in seven matches ... Gannon left the GLIAC following the 2007-08 season to join the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
