CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Wayne State volleyball squad shutout Lees McRae College, 3-0 (30-23, 31-29, 30-26), in the Warriors' first match of the Capital City Classic in Charleston, W.Va., Friday afternoon. WSU is now 3-2 as all three victories have come by a score of 3-0.
Junior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) led the Warriors with 12 kills as middle blocker Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./GVSU) added 10 kills to go along with her six blocks. Toni Purgatori (Yale, Mich./Lake-Sumter C.C.) and Sofi Berczely (Buenos Aires, Argentina) also had solid performance as they recorded nine and seven kills, respectively.
Junior setter Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./Kal. Valley C.C.) had 45 assists and libero Sei Hee Hwang (Toronto, Ont./Cedarbrae) tallied a team-high 29 digs along with three service aces.
The Warriors continue play against Indiana University (Pa.) this afternoon.
