DETROIT - The Wayne State volleyball team (5-5, 0-2 GLIAC), after recovering from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth-set tiebreaker, dropped a 3-2 decision to Ferris State (7-4, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) posted a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs. Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) had 10 kills and three blocks, while Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) collected nine kills and four blocks.
Despite outhitting FSU, .324 to .213, in the first set, Wayne State was edged, 31-29, in a battle that never saw a gap of more than four points between the two sides.
The Bulldogs cruised to a 25-13 win in the second set, but momentum shifted to the home side of the net in the next two sets, as the Warriors tied it up.
The match was nearly over with FSU leading, 24-23, in the third until Wayne State grabbed the next three points, capped off with a kill by Gosselin to keep the match alive for the Warriors.
Tied at 17 apiece in the fourth, the Warriors took three in a row for a 20-17 lead on their way to a 25-20 victory, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
The Bulldog offense caught fire, however, as they hit .429 and came away with a 15-11 win and the match.
Ferris State's Lisa Tobiczyk and Ashley Huntey had dig totals of 20 and 17, respectively, while Kristy Gilchrist paced the FSU offense with 18 kills and just one error.
WSU setter Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) notched 43 assists and seven digs, and Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) contributed six kills with eight digs. Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) had a team-best 17 digs.
Wayne State's five-match homestand continues Tuesday against Northwood at 7:00 p.m. The Warriors will host Findlay next Friday night (Sept. 19) and Hillsdale the following afternoon.
