DETROIT, Mich. - In its first home match of the season, the Wayne State volleyball team (1-8, 1-3 GLIAC) recorded its first victory of the season on Friday evening, 3-0, over conference foe Mercyhurst College (6-7, 1-4 GLIAC).

Wayne State looked sharp in the early going, as it lead by as many as eight points during the course of the first game. Mercyhurst called a timeout to regroup as WSU held a 21-14 advantage, but thanks to a service ace from freshman Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) and a kill by Karri Kuczajda (Waterford, Mich./Chelsea) two points later, the Warriors took a 30-21 victory in game one.

The second frame was closely contested, as neither team held more than a two-point lead for most of the game. Each team used two timeouts as the lead was passed back and forth, but ultimately the Warriors were able to squeak out a 33-31 win to go ahead 2-0.

The third and final game began as a back-and-forth affair much like the second, until Wayne State pulled out to a 15-9 lead. The Lakers took a timeout, but WSU's momentum allowed the Warriors to take 15 of the next 23 points, capped off by a Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) service ace, for a 30-17 victory.

Wayne State will host Gannon at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday in GLIAC action at the Matthaei.
