DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (6-5, 1-2 GLIAC) earned its first conference win of the season, 3-1, against Northwood (4-7, 1-2 GLIAC) on Tuesday night at the Matthaei. The Warriors snapped a 10-match losing streak against the Timberwolves.

After dropping the first set, 25-22, Wayne State took three straight sets for its first victory against Northwood since Oct. 9, 1998. The Warriors amassed a season-best 51 kills and posted a .311 hitting percentage, compared to Northwood's .162 mark.

Four Warriors posted double-digit kill totals, led by Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) who collected 13 kills as well as a team-high 14 digs. Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) had 12 kills and nine digs, Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) notched 11 kills with three blocks, and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) totaled 10 digs and eight blocks.

After an opening set in which WSU never held the lead, the Warriors responded with a resounding 25-15 win to tie the score at one set apiece.

In a back-and-forth third set, Wayne State was down, 22-21, before making a four-point run to win the set and take a 2-1 overall lead.

The Timberwolves held an early 3-2 lead in the fourth until the Warriors grabbed eight of the next nine for a 10-4 lead. Wayne State led by as many as eight points on its way to a 25-19 win and the overall match victory.

Setter Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) had a productive match with 41 assists, four kills, six digs, four blocks and a service ace.

Wayne State will wrap up its five-match homestand this weekend, hosting Findlay on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and 19th-ranked Hillsdale on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
