DETROIT - The Wayne State volleyball team (8-2, 0-2 GLIAC) suffered its third straight conference match loss, and its first 3-0 defeat of the season to visiting Ashland (11-3, 2-0 GLIAC) Tuesday evening at the Matthaei in Detroit.
WSU held a 23-20 lead in game one as senior middle blocker Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) had five straight attempts go for kills, but the Eagles finished the game on a 10-point run for the 30-23 win.
AU then took game two by the score of 30-25 before Wayne State tried to avoid the sweep early in the third as Joris had three kills and a block assists in the first 12 points of the third game, helping the Warriors to an 8-4 lead. After Ashland went up 27-18, Wayne State went on a five-point rally, but the Eagles regrouped to earn the overall victory.
Joris, the GLIAC leader in blocks, totaled seven on the night with a team-high 18 kills for her seventh straight double-digit kill performance. Senior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) added 10 kills and a .421 hitting percentage for WSU.
Defensively, junior libero Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina), who leads the league in digs, had 19 against the Eagles.
The Warriors travel to Erie, Pa., this weekend for matches at divisional foes Mercyhurst (Friday) and Gannon (Saturday).
