ERIE, Pa. - The Wayne State volleyball team earned its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Friday night with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-23) victory at Mercyhurst College, marking the Warriors' fourth straight defeat of the Lakers. WSU's record now stands at 9-3, 1-3 GLIAC as MC falls to 11-5, 1-4 GLIAC.
Wayne State hit an impressive .308 with 40 kills and just eight errors for the match while MC had 35 errors and hit just .065. In game two, the Warriors had just one error in 29 attacks.
Senior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and junior Nicole Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) combined for 17 kills and no errors in 39 attempts (.436 hitting percentage). Smolen added three aces and 11 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
WSU out-blocked the Lakers, 11-3, led by senior Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) who chimed in with three solo blocks and three block assists. Sophomore Jordan Peek (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) added two solo and two assisted to the total.
The Warriors round out their annual Erie trip with a South Division match-up at Gannon Saturday at 4 p.m.
