ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-6, 4-3 GLIAC) had its four-match winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon at Ashland University (8-6, 4-3 GLIAC) following a 3-0 setback at Kates Gymnasium.
The Warriors were shut out for the first time all season by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 26-24.
Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln), and Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) tied for team high honors with nine kills apiece. Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) chipped in five kills with four blocks.
After the Warriors built a 16-11 lead in the opening set, the Eagles went on a 14-5 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Midway through the second, Wayne State won three straight points to tie the score at 16-16, but Ashland grabbed nine of the next 13 to win the set.
Wayne State went on a four-point run to tie the third set at 16-16 again. Despite never taking a lead in the set, the Warriors stayed within a point the rest of the way before the Eagles could emerge with a 26-24 decision.
Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) led all players with 16 digs, and Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) racked up 30 assists.
Wayne State returns home to the Matthaei next weekend to host Saginaw Valley State on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Lake Superior State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
