DETROIT - Wayne State held an 8-1 advantage in service aces to run away with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-23) win over visiting Saginaw Valley State for the Warriors' first home win of the season. Wayne State is now 12-3 overall and evens its GLIAC record at 3-3 while SVSU falls to 6-14 overall and remains winless in the league at 0-7.
WSU raced out to a 5-1 lead in game one as Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) had a big kill and doubled with setter Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) for a block. The teams then exchanged four-point runs midway through the game, but a Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) kill finished the 'Cards off on game point.
The second game was close early on, with SVSU leading 14-13, forcing Wayne State to take a time out. Out of the huddle, sophomore Jordan Peek (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) had a kill to tie the game and the Warriors never trailed in the game again. Joris had consecutive kills, followed by back-to-back kills by Smolen to give WSU a 25-19 advantage. Peek and Nicole Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) then denied the Cardinals on two blocks in a row and Jackson got the game-winning point on a kill in the middle.
The Warriors found themselves down in the final game, 9-5, but serving proved to be the difference as libero Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina) tied the game at 10 with back-to-back acees. Joris then had a kill off a Saginaw Valley service reception along with a solo block to give WSU a 13-11 lead. Smolen and Bittner each served up a pair of aces and SVSU had two service errors in the final minutes to seal the Warrior win.
Joris (14 kills, 12 digs) and Smolen (12 kills, 11 digs) both recorded double-doubles, while Peek led all players with two block solos and five block assists. Jackson added five block assists and seven kills.
WSU hosts Northwood Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
