DETROIT - WSU took game one, but had its three-match winning streak came to an end with a 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 30-24, 30-21) loss to Northwood Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei. The Timberwolves improve to 12-7 overall and 6-2 GLIAC as Wayne State falls to 11-4 and 3-4.
Senior middle blocker Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) had a hand in four of the Warriors' first five points in the first game with two kills, an assist and a solo block as WSU held a 5-3 lead. Joris continued her dominance with three straight kills that gave Wayne State a 10-point advantage (17-7) as her first six attempts all went for kills. NU climbed back within three at 25-22, but setter Kerri Royer's (Lawton, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) dump gave the Warriors the game one win.
WSU was up 6-4 early in game two, but Northwood answered with a 10-2 run that gave the T'Wolves enough cushion to tie the match. NU then took a one game lead with a victory in the third game thanks to 11 hitting errors by WSU.
The final game was close until the halfway point when Northwood rallied off seven straight points and close the game off on a 13-2 overall run.
For the second straight match, Joris and Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) each recorded double-doubles. Joris totaled 17 kills and 13 digs while Smolen had 14 kills and 15 digs.
WSU travels to the Upper Peninsula next weekend with matches at Northern Michigan (Oct. 7), Michigan Tech (Oct. 8) and Lake Superior (Oct. 9).
