DETROIT - The Wayne State volleyball team (9-7, 4-4 GLIAC) was on the losing end of a five-set battle against Saginaw Valley State (13-3, 5-3 GLIAC) on Friday night at the Matthaei.

After the Cardinals took the first set, 26-24, the Warriors won two in a row before SVSU's 25-21 victory in the fourth set tied it up. The visitors came away with a 16-14 triumph in the fifth, evening WSU's home record to 3-3 on the year.

Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) totaled a season-high 19 kills along with 10 digs for a double-double. Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) finished with 14 kills and six blocks, while Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) and Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) had 13 kills apiece. Gear also led the team with a .346 hitting percentage.

Wayne State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Saginaw Valley State chipped away until it was tied at 12-12. The two sides exchanged leads several times, but SVSU erased a 24-23 deficit with a three-point run to end the set.

The Warriors led wire to wire in the second set to even things up. They went down, 14-9 in the third before making a 16-7 run to go ahead, 2-1, in the match.

The fourth set was tied at 13 apiece before SVSU took the lead which it never relinquished, forcing a fifth and deciding set. Wayne State was ahead in the fifth, 14-13, but three straight attack errors allowed the Cardinals to take the match.

Wayne State's dig leaders were Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) with 25 and Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) with 12. Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) contributed 36 assists, and Ashley Burgess (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) chipped in 14.

Lake Superior State comes to the Matthaei to face the Warriors on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
