Detroit - WSU had its third-highest kill total (66) in a 3-1 (30-20, 30-27, 25-30, 30-17) win over Ashland University Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Volleyball action in Detroit. The Warriors improve their overall record to 6-9 and 2-5 in the league while the Eagles lost their eighth straight to fall to 4-14, 0-6.
Leading 24-20 in game one, redshirt freshman Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) served out the final six points, including two aces, and junior Toni Purgatori (Yale, Mich./Lake-Sumter C.C.) put down the block solo on the final point for the win.
The Warriors trailed 14-9 in the second stanza when redshirt sophomore Sofi Berczely (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Goethe Schule) tallied three straight aces to cut the lead. Then, with the scored tied at 27, WSU head coach Limin Jin called a timeout. The team responded with a sideout and a 30-27 win.
After losing the third game, Wayne State got off to a hot start in game four thanks to a nine-point run with senior Rebecca Hauge (Leamington, Ont.) serving. The Warriors won the decisive game 30-17.
Sophomore outside hitter Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) tied her career-high in kills as she recorded her second career 20-20 with 23 kills and 20 digs. Berczely also had a career-high with 15 kills and five aces.
The Warriors head north to face Lake Superior State (Oct. 10), Michigan Tech (Oct. 11) and Northern Michigan (Oct. 12).
