DETROIT - The Wayne State volleyball team (10-7, 5-4 GLIAC) came away from its second five-set marathon of the weekend with a 3-2 victory over Lake Superior State (3-10, 2-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.

The Warriors won the first two sets in rather lopsided fashion, 25-14 and 25-13, but the Lakers came back to tie up with 25-23 and 25-20 results. The fifth and deciding set, however, went in favor of the home team, 15-9.

Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) registered 20 kills, becoming the first Warrior since Miranda Robison in 2006 (25) to reach the 20-kill mark. She also contributed nine digs and two aces.

Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) had 13 kills and a remarkable 14 blocks, the most by any WSU player in this decade. Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) finished one shy of her season high with 45 assists, while Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) and Marcie Hill (Dearborn, Mich.) turned in dig totals of 18 and 11, respectively.

After WSU won the first two sets by a combined 23 points, neither side led by more than three points in the third set, which ended in favor of LSSU despite a .355 hitting percentage for the Warriors in the set.

Down 13-12 in the fourth, the Lakers went on a five-point run and never relinquished the lead, forcing a fifth set.

The score was tied at five apiece until a 10-4 Wayne State run ended the match.

Wayne State heads to the Upper Peninsula next weekend to take on Michigan Tech on Friday and Northern Michigan on Saturday.
