ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Wayne State volleyball team (1-15, 1-10) fell to the defending national champion and top-ranked team in the country, Grand Valley State, 3-0 on Friday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale.
The Lakers swept the match by scores of 30-24, 30-17, and 30-26 to improve to 11-0 in the GLIAC and 18-1 overall this season.
The Warriors kept it tight early on in the first game, as the Lakers led most of the way but not by more than three points. Down 18-15, Wayne State called timeout and then proceeded to take the next two points, but Grand Valley began to pull away and opened the night with a 30-24 victory.
The Lakers were strong in the second game, as the Warriors never held the lead and GVSU led by as many as 13 on its way to a 30-17 result.
The score was tied at six early in the third game before the Lakers went on a five-point run to take an 11-6 lead. Wayne State battled to keep it close, rallying to regain the lead, 19-17, but GVSU came back to tie the score at 22 before taking eight of the final 12 points.
Miranda Robison (Coldwater, Mich.) had 17 kills and a .302 attack percentage, her second-highest of the season. Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina) and Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) had 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
Wayne State will travel to Ferris State on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4:00 p.m.
