DETROIT - The Warrior volleyball team snapped its three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Lake Superior State Saturday at the Matthaei Center. WSU (9-8, 4-5 GLIAC) had 29 more kills and 25 more digs than the Lakers (6-15, 2-7 GLIAC) and held LSSU to a (-).033 hitting percentage.
Wayne State jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first game thanks to four Laker errors. After LSSU went up by one, the Warriors went on another run, scoring six straight points with redshirt junior Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) serving and digging up numerous LSSU attack attempts. Outside hitter Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) served out the final two points and pounded down the final kill of the game.
Five the Warriors' first 16 points in game two came off of service aces, including a pair by senior Leslie Coxon (Mason, Mich./Minn. State). Like game one, Lake Superior came back and led 19-18 and force WSU to call a time out. Following the time out, the Warriors outscored Lake State, 12-6, to win 30-25.
The Lakers took an early 3-1 lead in the final game, but a block assist by juniors Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Kelita Sinclair (Caledon, Ont./Turner Fenton) tied the game at 6-6. Sinclair joined in with Sofi Berczely (Buenos Aires, Argentina) on another block assist to put the Warriors up 22-17 and WSU went on for the sweep.
Joris led all players with 17 kills as Berczely added a season-best 11 with a .429 hitting percentage. WSU had three players with double-digit dig performance, highlighted by Sei Hee Hwang's (Toronto, Ont./Cedarbrae) 21, Pieper's career-high 18 and Smolen's 15 digs.
As a team, WSU outblocked Lake State, 14-5, with Joris recording seven and setter Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./KVCC) had six.
The Warriors wrap up the weekend with a 1:00 pm match against Michigan Tech Sunday.
