HOUGHTON, Mich. - In a battle between the top two blocking teams in the conference, the Wayne State volleyball team (10-8, 5-5 GLIAC) erased a two-set deficit but fell short of a full comeback in a 3-2 loss Friday evening at Michigan Tech (13-5, 8-2 GLIAC).
The Huskies appeared to have a sweep in the works with 25-19 and 25-21 results in their favor over the first two sets. The Warriors recovered, however, with wins of 25-17 and 25-22 to force a fifth set.
Michigan Tech took the final set, 15-7, to extend its winning streak to six matches. Wayne State has played three straight five-set marathons, two of which resulted in losses.
Junior outside hitter Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) collected 17 kills and 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) finished with 10 kills apiece, while Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) and Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) posted dig totals of 13 and 12, respectively.
Wayne State, which despite the loss is in a three-way tie for first place in the South Division with Hillsdale and Northwood, completes its trip to the U.P. continues with a 2:00 p.m. match Saturday at Northern Michigan.
