DETROIT - Wayne State was swept in three games (30-23, 30-27, 30-18) against 15th-ranked Grand Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball action Friday night at the Matthaei. The Warriors fall to 13-5 overall and .500 in the league at 5-5 as GVSU improves to 18-4, 10-1.
The Warriors held the early leads in all three games as Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) started the match off with a big kill and WSU led 4-1 in the first game. But Grand Valley went on an 11-2 run in the middle of the game to pull away with the win.
After trading sides, junior Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina) began the second game with a service ace. Two Kristen Buter (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) kills and an ace by junior Kelly Sines (Clinton, Mich.) tied the game at 13. The game was tied 12 times, but WSU took a 27-26 on a GVSU service error, but the Lakers scored three in row for the win.
Wayne State held a 5-2 advantage early in the third game as Joris had two blocks. The Lakers came back with 18 kills and a .378 attack percentage for the sweep.
Senior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) led the Warriors with nine kills, while Joris had eight and a team-high 18 digs.
WSU hosts another nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday as No. 20 Ferris State visits Detroit at 4 p.m.
