DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State volleyball team (1-18, 1-13 GLIAC) suffered a 3-1 defeat by GLIAC foe Findlay (17-6, 9-5 GLIAC) on Homecoming Saturday at the Matthaei.
The Oilers led wire-to-wire in game one, as they held a 26-12 lead and, despite a late charge during which the Warriors took six straight points, captured four of the final six points for a 30-20 decision.
Wayne State went down, 4-1, early in the second game before grabbing the next four points to pull ahead, 5-4, for its first lead of the match. Findlay called a timeout with WSU ahead, 14-12, and came back to take a 20-19 lead. The Oilers then took 10 of the final 14 points and game two, 30-23.
With the score tied, 4-4, in the third game, Wayne State caught fire and won the next 13 points for a 17-4 lead. Findlay chipped away at its deficit, however, and pulled to within one at 29-28, forcing a WSU timeout. A subsequent kill from Miranda Robison (Coldwater, Mich.) then sealed the game for the Warriors, 30-28.
Wayne State had 20 kills and just six errors for a .259 attack percentage in the third game, edging Findlay which hit .231.
The two teams passed the lead back and forth early in what proved to be the final game, as Findlay pulled away to a 30-21 win and the overall match victory.
Robison recorded her second straight double-double and led all players with 24 kills and 21 digs. Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina) also had 21 digs, while Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) contributed 17 digs.
The Warriors had strong play up front again from Karri Kuczajda (Waterford, Mich./Chelsea) and Mary Leverentz (Three Rivers, Mich.), who had five block assists each, and Jordan Peek (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth), who had three.
Freshman Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) had 46 assists to go with seven digs.
Wayne State will conclude its home schedule on Friday, Oct. 20, as undefeated and fourth-ranked Hillsdale comes to the Matthaei for a 7:00 p.m. start.
