DETROIT - The Warriors couldn't take advantage of 16 Ferris State service errors as No. 20 FSU defeated Wayne State, 3-1 (30-24, 31-29, 18-30, 30-26), Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei. WSU falls to 13-6 overall and 5-6 in the GLIAC while Ferris ups its record to 17-7, 7-5.
Game one saw the Warriors hold a 7-4 lead after a block and kill by sophomore Jordan Peek (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth). The 'Dogs came back to take a 16-10 lead, and eventually went up 24-16 before WSU went on a 7-1 run to close within two at 25-23. But the Warriors scored just one point the rest of the game as FSU earned the first game.
The second game was tight throughout as a block by Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) and Nicole Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) teamed together on a block tied the game at 18. Moments later, junior Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) had back-to-back aces to knot the game up again, this time at 22-22. The game was tied at 29 before FSU scored two straight points for the second win of the match.
The Warriors converted four straight FSU errors into a 4-0 run in the third game to lead 25-17. A pair of Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) aces and a Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) gave WSU a 30-18 win in the third.
Using the momentum, Wayne State led 16-11 in the fourth game thanks to consecutive blocks by Joris and Jackson and a successful pancake dig by Smolen. Ferris ended the game on a 13-6 run, however, to come away with the victory.
WSU had six fewer attack errors (34-28) and out-blocked Ferris, 16-5, as Joris had seven (1-6), Peek (2-4) recorded six and Jackson (0-5) totaled five blocks, but hit just .082 in the loss.
Wayne State hits the road where it is an undefeated 8-0 this season with a trip to Ashland, Ohio, on Friday, Oct. 21.
