Detroit - The Warrior volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force game five, but fell 3-2 (30-25, 30-19, 25-30, 28-30, 15-11) to the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 17 at the Matthaei Center. Wayne State drops to 6-13 overall and 2-9 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while FSU improves to 11-10, 8-3.
After losing the first two games, the Warriors charged out to an early 9-3 lead in the third set. Up by as many as 11 points (23-12), sophomore Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and senior Rebecca Hague (Leamington, Ont.) combined for three big kills in the final four points to give WSU the 30-25 victory.
The fourth stanza was tight throughout, but Wayne State led until the Bulldogs took a 27-26 advantage. That's when WSU head coach Limin Jin called a time-out. The Warriors regrouped, forced a Bulldog service error and Smolen and Hague had timely kills. Then Smolen joined junior Toni Purgatori (Yale, Mich./Lake-Sumter C.C.) for the game-ending block.
The decisive game five was tied four times until WSU took a 10-9 lead on a Smolen kill. But Ferris State scored six of the next seven points for the match.
Hague had a season-high 15 kills and her second triple-double in a week with a team-high 32 assists and 14 digs. Smolen had a match-high 17 kills and added 10 digs. Senior BreAnne Detrick (Lambertville, Mich./Owens C.C.) tied for match-high honors with 20 digs.
Both teams were hampered by service errors, combining for 32 (FSU 19, WSU 13). The Warriors have lost six matches that have gone to five games this season.
