INDIANAPOLIS - In its opening match at the inaugural Asics GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, the Wayne State University volleyball team (11-9) battled to a 3-2 victory over 17th-ranked Lewis University (19-4) on Friday afternoon.
The Flyers came into the tournament riding an 18-match winning streak, but the Warriors recovered from a 2-1 deficit to win two straight sets for the upset.
Each of the first three sets ended by identical 26-24 scores, with the first and third finishing in favor of Lewis. Wayne State forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in set four, and finished the match with a 19-17 triumph.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) eclipsed the 20-kill mark for the third time in the last four matches. She finished with 21 kills along with 14 digs, two blocks and two aces.
Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) also posted a double-double, as she registered a season-high 50 assists as well as 10 digs. Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) contributed 13 kills and four block solos, while Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) and Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) totaled 11 kills each.
Wayne State is slated to play Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m.
