ERIE, Pa. - Wayne State's volleyball team won the final two games to come back and completed the season sweep over Mercyhurst College with a 3-2 (28-30, 30-24, 23-30, 30-25, 15-10) win in Erie, Pa., Friday, Oct. 22. The Warriors also defeated MC, 3-0, on Sept. 18 in Detroit.
Mercyhurst (5-19, 1-12 GLIAC) took the first game, 30-28, but the Warriors (11-10, 6-7 GLIAC) charge back for a 30-24 win in game two thanks in part to 18 total kills and a .333 hitting percentage. The Lakers took a 2-1 lead though with a 30-23 win in the third game.
Another 18-kill performance in game four helped the Warriors tied the match and force a fifth and decisive fifth game for just the second time this season. WSU made just two errors in the final game complete the comeback.
Middle blocker Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./GVSU) tied for match-high honors with 20 kills. She also contributed in half of the Warriors' blocks with three solo and nine block assists.
Outside hitter Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) recorded a career-best 15 kills to go along with 15 digs for her third double-double of the season. Sofi Berczely (Buenos Aires, Argentina) added 11 kills and six total blocks.
Other top performers for WSU were libero Sei Hee Hwang (Toronto, Ont./Cedarbrae) with a match-high 39 digs and setter Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./KVCC) with 52 assists.
WSU looks even its league record on Saturday afternoon at Gannon.
