Detroit - The Warrior volleyball team accomplished three important goals Friday night. It stopped a five-game losing streak, avenged an early-season loss and stayed alive in the race for a spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-24) sweep of the Mercyhurst Lakers at the Matthaei. WSU's record goes to 7-14 overall and 3-10 in the league as MC falls to 15-12, 4-9.
Game one started out fast with the Warriors taking a 5-2 lead. But the 'Hurst charged back with a 7-0 run. The game was tied at 25 when Wayne State ran out the final five points for the 30-25 win.
The Warriors got out of the gates fast again in the second game with a 10-3 lead. WSU maintained its lead and Sofi Berczely's (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Goethe Schule) kill sealed the 30-22 victory.
Trailing early in the final game, the Warriors came back to tie the game at 9-9. They outscored MC 18-7 during one stretch and won 30-24 as senior Rebecca Hague (Leamington, Ont.) scored the Warriors' final two points on kills. Hague recorded her third triple-double in 15 days with 13 kills, 37 assists and a match-high 13 digs.
Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) led all hitter with 18 kills on the night, while Kelita Sinclair (Caledon, Ont./Turner Fenton) pounded out a .545 hitting percentage (13-1-22).
The Warriors had a season-high .298 hitting percentage as they out-hit Mercyhurst 70-33. The 70 total kills is a season-best for a three-game match and third highest total overall.
