HILLSDALE, Mich. - Wayne State (14-8, 6-8 GLIAC) was swept, 3-0, by Hillsdale College (16-10, 9-6 GLIAC) in a South Division volleyball match on Friday, Oct. 28 at the Jesse Phillips Arena. The loss is just the second road defeat of the season for WSU as the game scores were 33-31, 30-19 and 30-21.
A tight game one saw the Warriors hold a 28-25 lead as Holly Soldenski's (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) tip scored a kill, followed by an Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) kill and service ace. But the Chargers scored four unanswered to go up 29-28 when senior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had a kill and classmate Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) served up another ace for a one-point cushion. After tying the game at 31, HC rallied for the final two points and the win.
After changing sides of the net, Hillsdale jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game two. The Chargers extended their lead to 17-7 before a Warrior run while junior Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) was serving brought them within five points (18-13). HC hit .359 as a team for the game, compared to WSU's .111.
The final game was close early with WSU leading 10-8 on Joris' fourth straight kill of the game. But Hillsdale went on a 7-1 run and hit .386 to pull away with the victory.
Joris finished with her 12th double-double of the season with a match-best 14 digs and team-high 12 kills. Royer was one dig shy of a double-double with 34 assists and nine digs to her credit, while Pieper chipped in with 10 digs defensively.
Nicole Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Sexton) and Soldenski added solid hitting performances with eight and seven kills, respectively.
The Warriors are off until next weekend when they wrap-up the regular-season schedule with three home matches: Northern Michigan (Nov. 4, 7 pm), Mercyhurst (Nov. 5, 1 pm) and Gannon (Nov. 6, 1 pm).
