FINDLAY, Ohio - The Wayne State volleyball team (8-16, 4-12 GLIAC) pushed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division champion Findlay Oilers (24-6, 11-3 GLIAC) to a fifth game, but lost 3-2 (30-12, 30-12, 29-31, 29-31, 15-12) on Saturday, Nov. 1.
In the first two games, WSU combined to hit (-).120 and lost both games by a score of 30-12.
The Warriors fought back with 17 kills in the third and 12 in the fourth game to win by duplicate scores of 31-29. But the Oilers took the decisive set 15-12 for the match victory.
Senior Rebecca Hague (Leamington, Ont.) missed out on her fourth triple-double of the season by one kill. Her line included nine kills, 17 assists and 12 digs.
For the second night in a row, sophomore Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) was the lone Warrior with double-digit kills as she posted 18.
Wayne State won the battle at the net with 10.0 team blocks to UF's 8.0, led by Sofi Berczely's (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Goethe Schule) three block solos and one block assist and sophomore Kelita Sinclair's (Caledon, Ont./Turner Fenton) three block solos. But in the end, Kara Heitmeyer's 30 kills proved to be too much for WSU.
Saturday's loss was the seventh five-game loss for WSU. The Warriors wrap up their season at Hillsdale College on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
