DETROIT - The Wayne State volleyball season came to an end with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-22, 31-29) loss to Hillsdale on Senior Night at the Matthaei Center Friday night. WSU finishes the season with a 11-14 overall record (6-11 GLIAC) as four seniors concluded their Warrior careers: Darcie Amsdill (Dexter, Mich.), Sofi Berczely (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Leslie Coxon (Mason, Mich.) and Toni Purgatori (Yale, Mich.).
Game one was tied 7-7 before the Chargers (18-7, 11-5 GLIAC) went on a 23-10 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. HC used another rally in game two to take a 10-point lead, 24-14, until back-to-back block assists by Kelita Sinclair (Caledon, Ont.) and Purgatori then Sinclair and Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) brought the Warriors with six at 27-21. Hillsdale outscored WSU 3-1 during the final stretch of game two for the win.
Wayne State as the game was tied nine times in the first 24 points. The Warriors took a 16-12 lead on Kristi Pieper's (Roseville, Mich.) ace. A pair of Amsdill kills gave WSU a 25-22 advantage before Hillsdale went on a 5-0 run to go up by one. The score was knotted at 26, 27, 28 and 29 before HC came away with the victory.
Junior libero Sei Hee Hwang (Toronto, Ont.) recorded 42 digs on the night on her way to establishing a single-season school record of 602 digs. Smolen had a match-high 15 kills to go with her 13 digs.
