DETROIT - Wayne State (16-9, 8-9 GLIAC) wrapped up conference regular-season play with 3-0 win over visiting Gannon University (5-22, 0-17 GLIAC) in volleyball action Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Matthaei. The Warriors now enter the GLIAC Tournament as the fourth seed in the South Division and travel to top-seeded Ashland on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
WSU, who improved to 9-3 in three-game matches, started hot and never really cooled off. Senior Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich./Western) got things rolling in the first game as her fourth straight kill gave Wayne State a 13-6 advantage. She went on to record eight kills in WSU's first 16 points. Junior Holly Soldenski (Warren, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) sealed the game one win with two kills and two blocks in the final seven points.
Game two was tied seven times early on as the Lady Knights hung tough. WSU then rattled off an 8-0 run that included two blocks by sophomore Jordan Peek (Birch Run, Mich./Frankenmuth) to take a 23-16 lead. Joris had the game-winning kill to put WSU up 2-0 in the match.
Game three saw the Warriors have 12 of their 19 attacks go for a kill and a .579 percentage. A Karri Kuczajda (Waterford, Mich./Chelsea ) kill and Krisit Pieper (Roseville, Mich./Fraser) ace gave Wayne State a 24-12 lead. WSU then scored the final four points of the match on an ace by junior Michelle Bittner (Hamtramck, Mich./Regina), a Soldenski kill, a double block by Joris and setter Kelly Sines (Clinton, Mich.) and a solo block by Sines for the win.
Wayne State recorded its third-highest team hitting percentage of the season at .327. Joris led all players with 17 kills while senior Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) had nine kills and just one error.
Sines tallied a career-best 39 assists to go with her nine digs and two blocks. The Warriors out-blocked GU, 10.0-2.0, with Peek leading the way with one solo and four block assists.
