DETROIT - In a back-and-forth battle, the Warriors came up on the short end of a 3-1 (29-31, 30-26, 35-33, 30-23) loss to Ashland University in GLIAC volleyball action Friday, Nov. 9.

Game one was a see-saw fight. After a replay call, the Warriors tied the game at 29-29 on freshman Jeana Wiehl's block just before Ashland coach Sue Uebel was given a yellow card for disputing the official's call. Another block, this time by senior Allison Jurasek, won the game for WSU, 31-29.

Another tight game went to the Eagles, 30-26, as they led throughout game two.

Ashland then outlasted the Warriors in a 35-33 marathon in the third stanza. The game was tied from 29 on until the Eagles finally pulled away for the win.

Poor hitting (.039 hitting percentage) in the final game hampered WSU and the Eagles ended up with the 30-23 win.

Five Warriors had 10 or more digs including career-highs by freshmen Megan Smolen (23) and Karime Wohlrab (11),

Smolen was also the team's high hitter with 16 kills while senior Jaime Banners added 13 kills on the night.

Freshman Amber Chafins recorded 20 kills and 20 digs for the Eagles (14-17, 3-13) as they broke a 10-match losing streak. Four other Ashland players racked up double-digits in kills.

Wayne State wraps up its 2002 season Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. match against Findlay at the Matthaei Complex. The Warriors will honor their three senior members: Jaime Banners, Kate Jere and Allison Jurasek.
