ASHLAND, Ohio - The Wayne State volleyball team had its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss at Ashland in a 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Quarterfinal Wednesday night at Kates Gymnasium. The fourth-seeded Warriors, who finish the year with a 16-10 overall record, were defeated by the South Division's No. 1 seed by the scores of 30-23, 30-24 and 30-22.

Seniors Elisa Joris (Walled Lake, Mich.) and Megan Smolen (Grosse Ile, Mich.) each had nine kills in their final collegiate match. Joris' nine kills put her over the 1,000 mark as she ended her career with 1,003 total kills. Her 3.93 kills per game in her two years at Wayne State rank second all-time. Joris' 4.18 kpg this season is the third-best single-season mark and her 127 block assists is the fifth highest season mark.

Smolen wrapped up her four-year WSU career with 1,200 kills. The outside hitter ranks second all-times in total attempts (3,647), fourth in digs (1,263) and fourth in kills per game average (3.24).

Both teams struggled hitting as WSU had a .072 attack percentage while the Eagles (23-8) recorded a .101 percentage for the match. The difference came at the service line where AU served up 10 aces compared to just one by Joris for the Warriors.

Redshirt junior Kristi Pieper (Roseville, Mich.) had a career-high 28 digs in the libero position as senior setter Kerri Royer (Lawton, Mich.) had a team-best 20 assists.

Second-year head coach Ernie Gilbert will return eight letterwinners in 2006.
