ALLENDALE, Mich. - In the semifinal of the 2008 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament, Wayne State (17-12) was on the losing end of a 3-1 result to tournament host Grand Valley State (28-3) on Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse.
The first two sets both took extra points to decide, with Grand Valley winning the first (28-26) and Wayne State the second (26-24). However, the nationally fourth-ranked Lakers took over to decisively win the next two (25-18, 25-16), secure their 32nd straight home victory and advance to the GLIAC Championship match Sunday.
Sarha Gosselin's (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs set the pace for the Warriors. She also chipped in two service aces and three blocks.
Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) posted 10 kill each, Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.) finished with 19 digs, and Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) narrowly missed a double-double with 39 assists and nine digs.
Marcie Hill (Dearborn, Mich.) matched her season-high with 11 digs, and Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet) collected nine kills and three blocks.
Wayne State, which was ranked 10th in the region last week, will avait the results of Sunday night's selection process to see if it will continue on to the NCAA Regional Tournament, an honor bestowed upon the top eight teams in each region.
